Imported Models

The application is intended to be used with Revit models.  Models imported to Revit from some other applications and formats may require retracing in Revit and preparation before they can be analyzed as they will not generate an Energy Model in Revit (Analytical Surfaces and Spaces which are required).

While  FenestraPro does not currently convert non-Revit file formats for use in Revit, third party Add-ins for Revit may provide the ability to convert Rhino models to Revit elements.

Rhino Models

Due to complexities in the way that geometry is created in Rhino and that layers are used, compared to how Revit identifies elements, it is often best to import a Rhino model and use the outline to create a Revit model around this. There are also independent third party applications which can assist in the successful transition from Rhino to Revit.  FenestraPro does not currently convert/translate non-Revit format models for use in Revit.

A Rhino format model (.3dm) may be imported into Revit’s Family Editor so that it can be converted to a Conceptual mass.  This typically will then require remodeling.  Check levels in the model and create Mass Floors in Revit, then create an Energy Model to check that all geometry  is being read correctly.  If Rhino models are saved as .sat files, they may be able to be imported into the Mass Editor in Revit and then loaded into a project.

Sketchup Models

Sketchup uses faces and typically, imported sketchup models must be remodelled in Revit for use with FenestraPro.

Note: Since April 2024, Autodesk is no longer actively developing FormIT which previously provided an Add-in to import Sketchup models.  Autodesk now provides an online modelling platform Forma, which allows conceptual modelling and importing to Revit. FenestraPro also provides a Forma extension called Envelope Analysis, trials for which are available. Please add the extension to your Forma project, launch the Add-in and register for a trial if you are interested. Please see this section for more details HERE.
